Martin Cooper – Keynote Speaker
Martin Cooper is a pioneer in the wireless communications industry, an inventor and entrepreneur. He’s contributed to personal wireless communications technology over 50 years and conceived the first portable cellular phone in 1973. He’s considered the father of portable cellular telephony and recognized as an innovator in spectrum management.
Cooper was a division manager/head of R&D for Motorola. He’s started many businesses including co-founding GreatCall, maker of the Jitterbug phone and ArrayComm, the world leader in smart antenna technology.
Cooper is a member of the Wireless Hall of Fame. He’s a recipient of the IEEE Centennial Medal. In 2010, Cooper was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering and awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for Science/Technology. In 2011 he was nominated for the “Mikhail Gorbachev: Man Who Changed the World” Award.
Cooper holds a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering and honorary doctorate from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Alex Witt – Keynote Interviewer
Alex Witt hosts the MSNBC show “Weekends with Alex Witt.” As a MSNBC news anchor since January 1999, she has spent time on the campaign trail during the 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections. In the wake of the September 11th attacks on America, Alex broadcast from the World Trade Center and has continued to follow the war on terrorism in the Middle East and the War in Iraq. She recently broadcast from the World Trade Center on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. Alex hosted the series “MSNBC Adventurer,” the prime time broadcasts in the wake of the Asian tsunami and live broadcasts from London marking the 10th anniversary Princess Diana’s death in 2007. Fred Allegrezza is founder, CEO, and investor of multiple successful startup companies with over 30 years experience in technology, management and business development. Previously, Fred was the Executive Chairman at AnySource Media (ASM), developing software and content for Internet Connected HDTVs. ASM was acquired by DivX and continues to integrate ASM software into name brand HDTVs. Prior to that, Fred was co-founder /CEO of Vertasent, building Switched Digital Video for Cable TV. Vertasent, acquired by Motorola in 2006, delivered $50M in systems. In 1997, Fred founded Vivid Technology, a Video On Demand (VOD) company, which merged with Concurrent Computer Corporation, delivering over $125M in VOD, 40% of the cable market. Fred was an investor /Director for OpGate, developing advanced codecs and acquired in 2006 by Cisco for technology behind Cicso Telepresence. Previously, Fred was an executive with General Instruments (now Motorola) leading the development of Interactive Cable Systems.
Lori Bitter is President of Continuum Crew, an integrated communications firm focused on engaging mature consumers. She is also President and CEO of Crew Media, a media services company specializing in high-quality digital media engagements for the mature audience, which owns Eons.com, the premier online community for baby boomers and beyond. In 2010 Continuum Crew was named on Entrepreneur magazine’s 100 to Watch list. Lori has more than 30 years of advertising, public relations and strategic planning experience and is the author of numerous white papers on topics relevant to the senior and Boomer population. She is President of the International Mature Marketing Network (IMMN), and Publisher of GRAND Magazine, the digital magazine for grandparents and their families. Neal E. Cutler, Ph.D., is Executive Director of the Center on Aging of the Motion Picture & Television Fund [MPTF] in Woodland Hills, California. The Center oversees research and development of a portfolio of services to support the aging-in-place of thousands of entertainment industry retirees in Southern California. To combat social isolation MPTF developed the Computer-Assisted Social Engagement (CASE) project which places elder-friendly computers into the homes of 80-year olds who have never used computers. He is also Adjunct Professor in the USC Davis School of Gerontology, teachng courses in business and aging. Previously he was professor at USC, the University of Pennsylvania, Widener University, and the University of North Carolina teaching political science, business, and gerontology. Dr. Cutler has published four books, over 200 articles, and is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, the TIAA-CREF Institute, and the Employee Benefit Research Institute.
Andy Cohen is the CEO and co-founder, of Caring.com. With two million unique monthly visitors, Caring.com is the largest family caregiver site in the world. He was a management consultant for six years before entering the wireless industry. John Marick is the co-founder and CEO of Consumer Cellular, one of the longest operating and largest mobile virtual network operators of cellular phone service in the United States. In October 1995, Marick launched Consumer Cellular, with the belief that everyone should have access to the safety and convenience of cellular service. Under Marick’s leadership, the company has grown to more than 400 employees with offices in Oregon and Arizona. Marick’s career began with McCaw Communications. He noticed cellular operators were focused on high-use clients and early adopters, leaving individuals with lower needs struggling to find affordable service. Gary Moulton, a product manager in Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing Group and is currently spearheading an effort to evaluate and sustain the use of information and communication technologies by older adults. Gary, who has doctorates in education and business administration, spent 10 years at Apple before joining Microsoft in 1995. Prior to his work related to technology and older adults, Gary managed programs at Apple and Microsoft that supported hardware and software developers of assistive technology. Prior to his work in the IT industry he was a clinician and undergraduate/graduate instructor in human growth and development and the evaluation of individuals with disabilities.

Jim “Oz” Osborn is Executive Director and a co-founder of the Quality of Life Technology Center, a collaboration of Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh funded by the National Science Foundation as one of its Engineering Research Centers since 2006. He is also the Coordinator of University Life Science Initiatives for Carnegie Mellon. From 2001 to 2006 he was Executive Director of the Carnegie Mellon’s Medical Robotics Technology Center, as well as MERITS of Pittsburgh, a program to stimulate collaborations between clinical and technological researchers. Previously, he founded a regional economic development group, the Pittsburgh Robotics Initiative. From 1985 through 1999, he held research and management positions in Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute and led several multi-$M robotics R&D projects. Peter Radsliff is CEO of Presto Services Inc. , the leading provider of computerless email solutions to the home health technology market. Dan Siewiorek is the Buhl University Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He has been involved with the design of nine multiprocessor systems and a key contributor to the dependability design of over two dozen commercial computing systems. Dr. Siewiorek leads an interdisciplinary team that has designed and constructed over 20 generations of mobile computing systems. He has written nine textbooks in addition to over 475 papers. He is acting director of the Quality of Life Technology NSF Engineering Research Center and has been the recipient of the AAEE Terman Award, the IEEE/ACM Eckert-Mauchly Award, and the ACM SIGMOBILE Outstanding Contributions Award. A Fellow of IEEE, ACM, and AAAS, he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He received the B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and the M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Mike Starling is Vice President, and Executive Director of NPR Distributions’ Technology Research Center and NPR Labs –the only not-for-profit research and development center supporting public service technology development for broadcast radio.
In the 1970’s Mike founded, built and managed both commercial and noncommercial stations in Virginia (WKYY-AM, WUDZ-FM and WWLC-FM) and spent the 1980’s as Chief Engineer for NPR Member Station KPBS-FM in San Diego.
Mike joined NPR in 1989 as senior engineer, was named director of engineering in 1991, and Vice President for Engineering in 1998, and Vice President, CTO in 2005. He has represented NPR on regulatory technology initiatives for over 20 years before federal agencies, Capitol Hill, and innumerable broadcast venues.
Mike Starling is also a lawyer and member of the California and District of Columbia Bars.

Dr. Aaron Steinfeld is a Sr. Systems Scientist in the Robotics Institute (RI) at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his BSE, MSE, and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan and completed a Post Doc at U.C. Berkeley. He is the Co-Director of the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Public Transportation (RERC-APT) and the area lead for transportation related projects in the Quality of Life Technology Engineering Research Center (QoLT ERC).
QoLT Foundry - CMU
Curt Stone is an Executive in Residence and Founder/Director of the QoLT Foundry which is currently supported by a $1.5 million grant from NSF Engineering Research Directorate. The QoLT Foundry is identifying, evaluating and advancing technology for near term commercial opportunities. He is a entrepreneur with 25 years progressive management experience in product development, business development, marketing and sales. Prior to joining CMU he founded OrthAlign that developed and commercialized technology he invented. He has been awarded several patents for innovations and successfully launched more than a dozen new products. He has served on executive management teams for several venture backed early stage companies, specializing in strategic planning, relationships, marketing and product development for domestic and international markets. In his current role, he is working with investigators and entrepreneurs to drive disruptive market technologies and build large successful businesses.
Sherri Snelling, CEO and founder of the Caregiving Club, is also executive producer of the Silvers Summit at CES. She is a nationally recognized expert on America’s 65 million family caregivers with special emphasis on helping caregivers balance self-care while caring for a loved one. Sherri’s blog reaches more than eight million boomers monthly as a contributor to AARP, ThirdAge, wowOwow, VibrantNation and others. She is also the executive producer and host of Handle With Care, a caregiver cable TV program and creator of the Me Time Monday weekly videos in support of the non-profit Healthy Mondays Campaign. Sherri’s book on caregiving will be published in 2012. Sherri is the former chairman and current board member of the National Alliance for Caregiving, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. Sherri’s experience blends the worlds of technology and aging boomers as she has worked for UnitedHealthcare, Canon, Nintendo, Activision, among others.
The Aging in Place Institute
Louis Tenenbaum is a leading thinker, speaker and consultant on Aging in Place – the idea that our homes are the most desirable and economical place for housing and care. Based in Washington, DC’s Maryland suburbs, Louis helps businesses, nonprofits and individuals formulate and refine design, strategies, marketing and programming for Aging in Place homes, products and age friendly communities. In 2010 Louis wrote Aging in Place 2.0: Rethinking Solutions to the Home Care Challenge, published by the MetLife Mature Marketing Institute.
Adam is a senior mechanical engineer in the Palo Alto office of the international design firm IDEO. As a member of the Health, Wellness, and Social Impact group in IDEO’s design community, Adam brings to bear years of expertise in medical device design and biotechnology, as well as a passion for designing considered products and services that responsibly address pressing human needs. Adam is also co-host of the PBS Kids engineering show ‘Design Squad Nation”, a TV and web-based educational program inspiring kids to design and build creative solutions to challenges in their everyday lives. Most recently, Adam led the IDEO design team responsible for the creation of the Faraday, an aesthetically unparalleled electric bicycle that captured the people’s choice award at the 2011 Oregon Manifest bicycle design contest.
Susan Ayers Walker
Susan Ayers Walker is a boomer and a freelance journalist reporting on the intersection of technology and aging. Her articles have appeared in AARP the Magazine, AARP.Org, ACM’s Interactions, EETimes, MIT Insider, American Society on Aging Newsletter and other industry journals. She is a nationally known speaker on aging-in-place and technology. She has appeared on NBC, and CBS, and participated in a variety of radio talk shows. Susan is the co-founder of the SmartSilvers Alliance with a mission to foster technology applications that assist independent living for the older consumer. Susan developed and co-produced the Silvers Summit and Digital health Summits at CES. Susan is a member of American Society on Aging, Business forum on Aging, AARP and AgeTek committee chair, she received her BSEE in electrical engineering from Northeastern University and her Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers.
