Purchasing habits, social benefits affected by technology aging consumers

Once upon a time, maybe in the last century, grandma shopped for holidays and birthdays at her local department store. She still does – but often she researches the products online. And, may have emailed her grandson to discuss his gaming preferences.

GreatCall, the leader in providing mobile independence and security solutions for aging consumer and their caregivers, recently conducted a survey to measure the technology needs of the 65+ demographic. The survey found that technology has become integral to the 65+ lifestyle – with a strong message that seniors want technology – on their terms.

What does that look like? Eighty- four percent of respondents agreeing that the Internet has changed the way they obtain information about products. This demographic, like their younger counterparts, also believes that technology provides social benefits. Eighty- one percent of respondents agreed that technology is a tool that helps them stay in touch with family and friends.

When it comes to cell phones, attitudes are also positive – with most (63 percent) citing safety as the primary use. With 41 percent of those surveyed noting that cell phones are too complicated – identifying typing difficulties, small screens and confusing features as key culprits, GreatCall’s JitterbugTouch2 smartphone’s features provide meaningful solutions, including: a large on-screen keyboard (cited by 42 percent), a large touch screen (identified by 41 percent) and a long-lasting battery (noted by 38 percent).

Those surveyed noted that they see benefits from technology, particularly when it is created with their needs in mind. They consider quality (95 percent) and affordability (89 percent) and look for ease of use. With 70 percent making the purchase decision themselves, products created to meet these needs will be more meaningful and appealing to these decision-makers.
